Overall this property is beautiful, very clean, wonderfully landscaped, very beautiful beach, things you'd expect. Bartenders were wonderful & the beach servers do come to your chair & take your order which was awesome! We traveled with our 17 year old daughter & 16 year old son. Both kids had a good time, but that is mainly because we met another couple w/kids the same age. The kids program for younger kids appeared to be a really good program. The disco is located at the marina, a bit off property, begins at 11pm, allows over 21 & serves alcohol. We weren't quite ready to let our kids go unsupervised since there were alot of college kids. There are other night time activites, a circus at the convention center one night, a mayan dance poolside another w/vendors selling various jewelry, etc., so that was kind of cool. I would recommend this resort but there are a few suggestions I'd like to make. First, we went during spring break so I'm not sure if this is always the case, but if you didn't hold a pool or beach chair by 6am you weren't getting one til after 3pm. By 7am there is a towel, magazine or something holding a chair, so save early & you'll be fine. There is plenty of shaded spots to be had if you get there early. Second, the hotel provides boogie boards but the ocean floor here is VERY rocky. Third, take the 5" drive to Peurto Mareles to snorkel. You will save 1/2 & it's nice to get away for a day. Bus picks u up at the end of the drive & costs * pesos or * cents. Make rez's for restaurants by 7am day prior to dining or you'll eat buffet/rm svc.

I was so nervous going to the hotel, because I did not know what to expect. When my husband and I got there, we were overwhelmed. The hotel was beautiful, just like the pictures on the website. Everyone was so nice and polite, and willing to help and show us around. Our room was gorgeous; the Jacuzzi was huge and relaxing. The view was lovely and we had a long balcony, and shower was nice as well. Waking up in the morning was crazy, because the birds were loud and ignoring. It was a good alarm clock at 6:30 am, to an awesome view. The food was pretty good, a lot of choices. And last, the pool and the beach was beautiful nice breeze and the beds outside was so comfortable. I would recommend this resort to anyone. I say the best time to stay in February, August, and September. We went in February and it was not crowded until we got toward the end.

Bug Infested Room/Resort and Worst Customer Service Ever

I can only describe the customer experience we received from the hotel as being completely horrible. In fact each time I had to speak with the front desk it was awful and I did not want to do it because I was treated so poorly that I really felt in the end that the hotel's commitment to its customers ended right after you paid for the stay...essentially we have your money please don't bother us. I have traveled to Mexico 5 times over the last 10 years and to the Mayan Riviera 4 of those times and I have never been treated so poorly or have I stayed in a resort so poorly maintained and run. I'm talking a 1 or 2 out of 10. We stayed at this resort from Jan 13-23 2010. I travelled with my wife and our two young daughters' ages 4 and 2. We also travelled with my brother-in-law and his family who also had two young children roughly the ages of our girls. We have travelled together before to Mexico and found that having rooms close together enhanced our experience greatly allowing us to socialize during the evenings after our children went to bed. For this reason we requested 6 months in advance to be placed in adjoining rooms or at the very least, in close proximity to each other. Unfortunately this did not occur and it was the beginning of a very atrocious experience. Despite requesting an adjoining room or at least rooms close to other family we were placed in a room in a different building on the other side of the resort. Despite many visits to the front desk by all members of our party we were not put together. We were treated rudely by ignorant staff and management. Each time we inquired we were told to check back in a couple days. This went on for the first week of our 10 day trip until it was too late to make a difference. All this after booking 6 months ahead and several emails back and forth between our travel rep and the hotel specially requesting adjoining rooms. On the first full day of our trip my 2 year old daughter pointed out a dead mouse floating in the children's pool. We alerted staff and they thanked us and assured us we would be able to speak with management about it...when we tried to follow up with the person who's name we were given we had no luck finding that person. Having a dead mouse floating in the children's pool is deplorable and is a health violation. We finally moved rooms only after we found our daughters suitcase totally infested with bugs. Thousands of small bugs. Having been to Mexico many different times I am aware that if you leave food out you may get some bugs in your room but this was the kids suit case full of only clean clothes that was infested with bugs and what looked like small white eggs that they had been laying. I demanded the front desk manager follow me back to our room so he could see for himself the swimsuit teaming with bugs...the one we just pulled from the suitcase which was located right beside our bed. On the way to the room the manager lectured me about how Mexico was warmer than Canada where I came from and that we should expect to see a couple of bugs...I was just too stunned to say anything and couldn't believe I was being lectured. They moved us to the room above the one we were in and after thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting our bags and the girls clothes (which we did... not the hotel) we only saw the odd insect in our room each day. Unfortunately in the main buffet I encountered more bugs on the food. I was waiting for a waffle to be made and I went to grab a couple of pre sealed packets of syrup when I noticed that all of the syrup packets were covered by ants...not very sanitary and again not a concern for management when reported. We were located in building 10(rooms 1031 and then 1041). I strongly advise trying to change buildings (although good luck with that given our experience) if you are placed in this building as right behind our building was some sort of water treatment pond. They tried to make it look like a pond with a small fountain but the water was green and brown and it was extremely noisy like water treatment was occurring. It was often covered with a thick white foamy substance. The noise was bearable but the raw sewage smell that occurred many times filled our room any time we opened our door...quite an awful smell. Finally when it came to check out we tried to extend our time from noon to later in the day as we had a 7:30pm flight. We required the room for longer so our 2 year old daughter could take her afternoon nap. Without the nap we would be in for a long 6 hour flight home as she would be over-tired as the flight would have her up way past her bedtime. They flatly declined and would not provide us a later check-out. I asked for any place I could have where my daughter could nap but they refused saying they were full and needed to get the new customers their rooms. Once again the hotel only concerned with new business and new money....no concern for current customers. You don't know me from Adam but I am not a high maintenance person. I am easy going and am flexible and willing to go with the flow so to speak. I will put up with a great deal prior to being put out or getting angry but by the end of this trip I couldn't walk into the main lobby and see the front desk with the management and front desk employees without getting agitated and angry with how my family and I were treated. I strongly recommend that if you want a relaxing vacation where you are treated well that you choose anywhere but the Hotel Marina El Cid Spa & Beach Resort.

The property is beautiful and so clean. I was never hasseled about time shares on the property unlike some other resorts. The staff was bilingual, so communication was never a problem. This is by far the best vacation I have ever been on. I would recommend this resort to families or couples who are looking for some place more romantic than the hotels in Cancun.
